About Museo del Oriente de Morelos "Casa de Morelos"
During the siege of Cuautla in 1812, José María Morelos y Pavón made his headquarters in this 18th-century house beside today's town hall. Félix María Calleja arrived with about 5,000 men, shelled the town and cut off its water, and the insurgents held out for 72 days, from 19 February to 2 May, before slipping out through the lines at night. A plaque inside records that the house was officially recognised as Morelos's in 1920. President Plutarco Elías Calles bought it in 1927, it was declared a national monument under INAH's care in 1933, and on 30 September 1965 it opened as a museum devoted to the "Servant of the Nation" and the siege. Restoration work turned up pre-Hispanic remains, colonial architecture and objects from the Revolution.
Eight permanent rooms run from Morelos's early life to the death of Zapata. The first ones cover his years as a priest, with 18th- and 19th-century farm tools and religious objects, then his meeting with Hidalgo and his campaigns, with replica insurgent and royalist uniforms. Next comes the siege itself, with a cannon and copies of paintings, followed by his capture and execution. The second half jumps a century: the roots of Zapatismo, the meeting of Madero and Zapata, the taking of Cuautla, the Plan de Ayala that became the banner of land reform, and Zapata's death and legacy.
Out back is a garden with fruit and native trees and a space for cultural events. Pair it with the church of San Diego about 500 m to the north.
