About Juan Morales

Juan Morales counted 13,431 residents in 2020, which makes it the second-largest locality in the municipality of Yecapixtla after the seat itself (19,104). It sits on the eastern fringe of Cuautla, roughly 3 km from the city centre. Census figures show how fast it filled in: 4,896 people in 1980, 7,511 in 1990, 11,219 in 2000 and 12,756 in 2010. The town lies at about 1,355 m above sea level, with a mean annual temperature near 21 °C.

There is no single monument that justifies a trip here; what it offers is position. Its main streets, including Avenida Progreso and Avenida Revolución, feed into federal highway 160, which skirts Cuautla on the bypass. On that same Avenida Progreso, about a kilometre away, is Agua Hedionda, the public sulphur-water pool complex Cuautla is known for, and a few minutes beyond lies downtown Cuautla with its old railway station, the San Diego ex-convent and its Revolution museums.

Heading north-east, the road continues to Yecapixtla, the municipal seat. Its San Juan Bautista ex-convent is one of the 16th-century monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl that make up a World Heritage Site, and the town is famous for cecina, salted and air-dried beef. The municipality has 62 localities, and Juan Morales works mainly as the residential and commercial edge of the Cuautla urban area, so treat it as a base or a stop along the way rather than a weekend destination.

How to get to Juan Morales

Drive from Cuautla: 10 min, 6 km

Juan Morales is on the eastern edge of Cuautla, where Avenida Progreso and Avenida Revolución meet federal highway 160 (the Cuautla bypass). Downtown Cuautla is about 3 km away in a straight line, roughly 5 minutes by car.

From Mexico City, the simplest way is the Pullman de Morelos bus from Terminal Sur (Taxqueña) to Cuautla: buses leave hourly and the trip takes about 90 minutes, with tickets from roughly 120 to 220 pesos depending on class and time (Wikivoyage). Cuautla has no single terminal: Pullman de Morelos waits at Máximo Bravo 53, OCC (ADO) at 2 de Mayo 97 and Estrella Blanca at Ing. Mongoy 63, all downtown. From there take a taxi or a combi east toward Juan Morales. In Yecapixtla a combi line, route 5, runs to the colonia Juan Morales.

Coming via Yecapixtla instead, the Sur line bus leaves TAPO (AU ticket counters), runs through Chalco and Amecameca and drops you at the Yecapixtla junction, about 1.5 hours from the capital, where you pick up a combi. By car, the federal Mexico-Cuautla highway leads to that junction. The nearest pueblo on our list, Tlayacapan, is about 17 km away as the crow flies (roughly 30 minutes by road).
