Estadio Isidro Gil Tapia

Estadio Isidro Gil Tapia is the football ground of Cuautla, on the south side of the city, and for decades it was home to Club Deportivo Cuautla. Wikipedia lists a capacity of 5,000, while other sports directories give lower figures, around 3,200, and describe a natural grass pitch, so treat the number as approximate. We found no source stating the year it opened.

The stadium is named after Isidro Gil Tapia, a goalkeeper who played for Cuautla, Atlético Zacatepec and Club América in the 1950s and 1960s and later coached several teams. He is credited with inventing the metal-mesh goal. He died on 31 October 2016.

The club that played here has more history than most mid-sized-city teams. C.D. Cuautla was founded on 19 July 1952, finished runner-up in the Segunda División in 1953-54 and won a promotion play-off that took it to the Primera División, where it spent four seasons, 1955-56 to 1958-59. It came close to returning in 1971-72 and 1978-79 and lost the promotion matches to Atlas both times. Its nickname was Los Arroceros. The club was dissolved in June 2022.

The ground also hosts other sports; local press has covered youth American football games by Los Olmecas de Cuautla. It is a short stop for anyone already walking Cuautla's historic centre who likes provincial football; there is no museum or guided visit.
