About Los Venaditos

On the edge of Tepoztlán, in the Valle de Atongo, a community-run sanctuary protects a patch of cloud forest with white-tailed deer and a waterfall of roughly 30 metres. It is known as the Santuario de los Venaditos, and according to Posta it belongs to the municipality of Tepoztlán, with local comuneros caring for its green areas and animals for more than ten years. Admission is about 40 pesos (Chilango, which gives the address as Antiguo Camino a Santo Domingo Ocotitlán, number 100).

Two routes start at the entrance: one to a lookout where the deer are kept and one to the falls, each about 15 to 20 minutes on foot through ferns and dense growth. You can do both in a day. The water does not run all year: the drop is fuller in the rainy season and can shrink to a trickle in the dry months. Food and Pleasure describes a clear plunge pool where you can swim, but it is shallow and jumping in is not advised. A lookout beside the falls, the Mirador de los Venados, has views over the forest.

The grounds also have caves with rock paintings, which you reach with the site's watchmen as guides. Chilango asks visitors not to disturb or feed the deer and not to leave rubbish, while Posta reports that the young animals can be fed; the sensible course is to follow the guards' instructions. Wear hiking shoes, preferably waterproof, and arrive early.
