About Santo Domingo Ocotitlán
Ocotitlán comes from Nahuatl: ocotl, the resinous pine, and titlan, "among" or "surrounded by", so the full name, Santo Domingo Ocotitlán, reads as a place surrounded by pines under the patronage of Saint Dominic de Guzmán. It stands at about 2,072 metres above sea level, well above the Tepoztlán valley floor, and belongs to Tepoztlán municipality, separate from the Pueblo Mágico people often confuse it with. There are no ruins or spas to advertise here; what you find is a mountain community with its own festive calendar.
The population has risen unevenly. The count was 1,039 in 1900 and 1,104 in 1910; the 1921 census found only 274, and it stayed under 377 until 1970. After that it grew: 744 in 1980, 1,317 in 2000, 1,541 in 2010 and 1,799 in 2020, the highest on record. The village's religious festivals were the subject of a 1999 anthropology thesis at UAM, "Calendario anual de fiestas religiosas en Santo Domingo Ocotitlán".
For walkers, a 2015 photo on Wikimedia Commons documents an amate fig growing around a rock on the old road to Ocotitlán, a detail that says a lot about the wooded, rocky landscape of this part of the range. Ask in the village before you head into the hills.
