About Yutanduchi de Guerrero

Set among Mixteca hills at about 1,650 metres, Yutanduchi de Guerrero is the seat of a 223 km² municipality bordering Santiago Tilantongo, San Pedro Teozacoalco and San Juan Tamazola. Its founding is recorded as 1650. Today 1,077 people live here (2020); the town peaked at 1,424 in 1960 and has been shrinking through migration.

Most handwork in town revolves around palm: about 96 percent of those in crafts make petates (sleeping mats), tenates (baskets) and sopladores (fire fans), and at Easter they weave figures for the festivities. It sells little and cheaply, so you see it in homes more than in shops. The town has a municipal market with grocery stalls and fruit sellers, a Diconsa shop and a Catholic church on the plaza; for a proper tianguis people go down to Nochixtlán.

The patron-saint fiesta runs 13 to 16 August for the Virgin of the Asunción, with fireworks castles and pyrotechnic bulls. Pentecost is celebrated in June, and on 24 and 25 May people give thanks to San Marcos for the springs. At All Saints altars go up in homes and the Mascaritas dance goes on for ten days.

This is a town not built for tourism: there is no hotel we can confirm and no marked walk, but there is a quiet plaza, and a Mixteca few people visit.

How to get to Yutanduchi de Guerrero

Drive from Oaxaca: 2 h 15 min, 139 km

Yutanduchi lies south of Asunción Nochixtlán, in the Mixteca Alta. The stretch to Nochixtlán is about 80 km and roughly 3.5 hours on the most recent figures we found; Oaxaca city is about 145 km and around 4.5 hours. From Oaxaca, reach Nochixtlán first by federal highway 190 or the 135D toll road (Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca); from there take the road toward Jaltepec, Morelos, Guadalupe Victoria and the Santiago and Santa Cruz Mitlatongo turn-offs, to Yutanduchi. The section between Guadalupe Victoria and Yutanduchi is dirt and gets bad in the rains.

By public transport: take a bus from Oaxaca to Nochixtlán (Oaxaca's first-class terminal is on Calzada Niños Héroes de Chapultepec). From there, the town has a passenger and freight service in private pickups that leaves Yutanduchi for Nochixtlán before dawn, between 4:00 and 5:00, and returns in the afternoon; times may have changed, so confirm with the town hall or in Nochixtlán the day before. Given the distance and the road, going in your own vehicle is the practical option. Teposcolula is about 57 km away as the crow flies, with no direct link.
