    About Mesones Hidalgo

    Mesones Hidalgo is the seat of a municipality of about 353 square kilometres in the west of Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, within Putla District. The municipal plan explains the name through a merchant, Guillermo Acho, who bought land at Putla and built lodgings where muleteers rested their animals on the route between the coast and Puebla; another possible origin is the large wooden tables once used to process hides and meat.

    The 2020 census counted 976 people in the town and 4,424 in the whole municipality. The town lies against Putla Villa de Guerrero to the north and west, the market hub that links the Mixteca with the coast and draws Mixtec, Amuzgo and Chatino people.

    Two dates matter in the local calendar. On 19 March the town honours San José, and on 18 April it holds the patron feast, with calendas, processions, regional dances and fireworks; wind bands are the music you hear most.

    Mesones Hidalgo is in the west of the Sierra Sur, in Putla District, and its municipality borders Putla Villa de Guerrero, which is about 374 km from Oaxaca city. The practical approach is to reach Putla first and ask there about transport on to Mesones Hidalgo; from Teposcolula it is about 86 km as the crow flies, so allow several hours on mountain roads (approx.). We found no source for the exact road, bus lines or schedules: confirm them in Putla before you go.
