San Juan Mixtepec Distrito 08

In Mixtec the town is called Ñuu Snuviko, "place where the clouds descend", and the name makes sense once you see the setting: the seat lies at about 1,723 m among peaks above 2,200 and 2,400 m, such as Shinicuáza (2,437 m) to the south and Pedreguero (2,266 m) to the west. The climate is temperate highland, about 18 °C on average, with local data showing over 1,400 mm of rain a year.

The suffix "Distrito 08" separates this municipality from another San Juan Mixtepec, in the Miahuatlán district. This one belongs to the Juxtlahuaca district and borders Tlaxiaco, Juxtlahuaca, San Juan Ñumí, Santiago Nundiche and Tezoatlán, across 62 localities that totalled 7,611 people in 2010. Its altitude runs from 1,600 to 3,000 m, mostly in the Mixteca Alta, with about 9% in the Cordillera Costera del Sur (INEGI).

The seat is the municipality's largest locality: 1,674 residents in 2020, against 1,670 in 2010 and 1,518 in 2005. Yosoba, Santa Cruz and Colonia Nueva Stucua lie close by. About 96% of residents identify as indigenous and 75% speak an indigenous language (2020), down from 82% in 2010.
