    About Izúcar de Matamoros

    Izúcar de Matamoros is a city in south-western Puebla, seat of the municipality of the same name, in Puebla's Mixteca Baja. The name comes from the Nahuatl Itzocan, usually translated "place of the flint road", though some read it as "place of obsidian". The Spaniards could not pronounce Itzocan and ended up saying Izúcar, and some documents mistakenly write it Azúcar, sugar: fittingly, it was one of the first places in Mexico given over to sugar cane, and sugar remains a mainstay of its economy. The surname honours the insurgent Mariano Matamoros, whom Morelos called his right arm. It is the state's fourth-largest city, after Puebla, Tehuacán and Atlixco.

    The biggest building downtown is the former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, with the city's largest church. The parish of Santa María de la Asunción was finished around 1640 and blessed by Juan de Palafox in February 1641, and the Casa de la Cultura occupies a building put up by the Juaninos order. A museum displays pieces from the cultures that lived in the region, and at Las Bocas, on Cerro de Teponaztle, there is an archaeological zone.

    Izúcar is famous for its pottery: incense burners for ceremonies, polychrome clay figures and above all trees of life, which visitors often take home. The big festival is for Santo Domingo, the patron saint, on 8 August, with a week of religious celebrations and a fair in the park. Nearby are bathing resorts such as Ojo de Carbón and Amatitlanes.

    Izúcar is about 67 km by road from Puebla city, roughly 1 h 20 min by car to the south-west. Autobuses Oro runs buses from Puebla's CAPU terminal roughly every 2 hours. Atlixco, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, is about 35 km away in a straight line, and Cuautla in Morelos about 56 km.
