About Jicolapa

Jicolapa lies in the northern part of Zacatlán municipality at about 2,100 m, so close to the town of Zacatlán that the drive takes some five minutes. With 4,614 people at the 2020 census it is one of the municipality's largest communities. The climate is mild and fairly humid, with summer rain and average temperatures of 12 to 18 °C, and most families make their living from farming.

For decades the census listed it as a barrio. Between 1990 and 2000 its status was left undefined because its population kept rising and falling, and a decree dated 26 November 2001 formally made it a pueblo.

Local life revolves around the Señor de Jicolapa, the patron image. Tradition holds that it appeared on one of the walls of what is now the chapel in the centre, where it is still venerated. The main feast falls a week before Ash Wednesday, with a special Tuesday in its honour, the crowning of a festival queen, and arts and entertainment events. At Holy Week a large part of the village takes part in a re-enactment of the Passion.

Away from the centre, the best-known spot is Los Baños, a set of clear pools where people go to cool off.
