Cascadas de Tulimán

Waterfall 7 km south of Zacatlán

Ejido-run park on the same river as Quetzalapan: a roughly 300-meter fall in three drops, a warm mineral pool and hanging bridges.

South of Zacatlán, the Quetzalapa River tumbles off the edge of the plateau into a deep, forested canyon, and the land on one side belongs to the ejido of Tulimán. The ejido runs an ecotourism park there, and its centerpiece is a waterfall that drops in three linked stages for a total of around 300 meters; some promoters put it even higher and call it one of the tallest in Mexico.

The park is divided into zones. The first is a short walk from the parking area to the viewpoints facing the main falls. The second is a longer, steeper trail through forest hung with Spanish moss, past a pool of warm mineral spring water and over a hanging bridge to a huge hollow tree that several people can stand inside. The third holds the adventure activities, including zip lines, archery and a smaller fall known as the Cascada del Cajón.

The Salto de Quetzalapan, on the same river, is reached from the Chignahuapan side by a different ejido, so the two are separate visits with separate fees. Tulimán has cabins and campsites if you want to wake up to the sound of the water.

What to see and do

Look out at the three-stage main fall from the viewpoints near the entrance.
Hike the forest trail to the warm mineral pool and take a dip.
Cross the hanging bridge to the giant hollow tree.
Try the zip lines or archery, or find the smaller Cascada del Cajón.
Stay overnight in a cabin or at the campground.

Getting there

Tulimán is about 9 km from central Zacatlán, roughly 20 to 35 minutes by car: take the highway toward Chignahuapan and follow the signs for the turnoff. The last stretch is a dirt road that can be steep and rutted, so drive slowly, especially after rain. Taxis from Zacatlán can take you. The ejido charges an entrance fee, with activities and cabins paid separately; bring cash.
