About Atzingo

In the centre of Atzingo wells a spring famous for its pure water, and the name comes from it: atl, water, tsin, diminutive or reverential, and co, in, "at the little water" or "at the revered water". The spring lay on the trail linking Zacatlán with Huauchinango, a Totonac and Nahua trade route between the highlands and the Gulf later used by muleteers, and pre-Hispanic figures found around it suggest it was a ceremonial site.

Atzingo was one of the eleven barrios of Zacatlán town, probably from 1847, when the seat was named a city. An agrarian decree of 1947 gave it a 269-hectare ejido, handed over in 1953, and on 30 October 2001 the state congress raised it to a pueblo and created its local council; its government building went up in 2005. It covers about 8.4 km² and in 2020 its main settlement had 4,226 people.

It stands at about 2,140 m, between kilometres 4 and 9 of the Interserrana road north of Zacatlán, between the Zecepaco and Hueyapan rivers, tributaries of the Laxaxalpan. Besides the Atzingo spring it has Ameyalco to the west; until the 1970s brooks running off Cerro del Tezontle, such as 7 Respiros, Zaguaya and El Caño, crossed it. Zacatlán de las Manzanas, a Pueblo Mágico, is known for its orchards, cider and monumental clocks.
