    About Tonalapa

    Tonalapa is a junta auxiliar of the municipality of Tetela de Ocampo, in the heart of Puebla's Sierra Norte, about 10.5 km from the municipal seat. Its Nahuatl name is translated as "place where the water warms in the sun". It stands at about 1,900 m, surrounded by greenery and big hills, and had 720 people in 2020. It is about 141 km from Puebla city by road and 211 km from Mexico City.

    The climate is mild: sub-humid with summer rain over most of the area, and humid with year-round rain toward the north-west, with mean temperatures of 12 to 18 °C. People live mainly from farming. The landscape and vegetation make Tonalapa a good spot for ecotourism and adventure sports: El Pilón is used for rock climbing and rappelling.

    The patron-saint feast is on 25 July, for Saint James the Apostle, to whom the church is dedicated. On the Day of the Dead, people from the village's sections come to the cemetery in the centre to decorate the graves, pray and sing to their dead. Mountain cooking includes serrano chilli salsa with egg, mole poblano, escamoles, tlacoyos, chileatole and wild greens, with candied figs and chilacayote squash in piloncillo for dessert.
