Waterfall 8 km north of Tetela de Ocampo
Two tall waterfalls in the Xaltatempa canyon, run by a community group with cabins, trout, a zip line and rappelling.
North of Tetela de Ocampo, past the small village of Xaltatempa de Lucas, the land drops away into a steep canyon, and two waterfalls pour over its rim side by side. Published heights vary, but the bigger fall is roughly 100 meters and the smaller one around 40, and together they are the most visited natural sight around Tetela.
The site is looked after by Zempoal Tekitini, a local community group that built the trails, cabins and restaurant and runs the activities. A trail of about a kilometer follows the canyon, there are natural pools for swimming below the falls, and you can rappel down the rock beside one of them, cross on a zip line or go out on horseback.
The restaurant's specialty is trout, served several ways, and the cabins have fireplaces, which you will want: nights in this part of the Sierra Norte are cold. Bring biodegradable sunscreen if you plan to swim, and expect the falls to be fullest in the rainy season, roughly June to October.

Swim in the natural pools below the waterfalls.
Rappel down the rock face beside one of the falls, or ride the zip line.
