About Atzompa
Atzompa is a Nahua village in the Sierra de Zongolica, high in the municipality of Soledad Atzompa at about 2,328 metres, a few kilometres south of the municipal seat. With 4,433 inhabitants in 2020 it lends half its name to the municipality, which spans 1,370 to 3,100 metres near the Acultzingo heights and borders Puebla state to the south. Growth has been striking: the 1900 census recorded 84 people, and by 1990 there were 2,798.
The Nahuatl name has several readings. The most quoted builds it from atl, water; tzontli, hair; and the place suffix pan: "in the water's hair". Another reading gives "hill where storms fall", and locals say it refers to a waterfall that looked like a woman's long hair.
Ritual life follows the farming year. In March people hold the rain petition and, before sowing, the xochitlali, an offering to the earth. The Day of the Dead runs from 31 October to 2 November, and Cristo Rey is celebrated on 20 November. Typical food includes broths, mole, tamales, fresh corn and candied squash. Besides farming, Atzompa works in weaving, carpentry and fine woodwork. Its people are called atzompeños, and Nahuatl remains the community's language.
