    About Morelos

    This colonia Morelos, in the municipality of Villa de Tezontepec, had 1,330 residents in the 2020 census (10% of the municipality). It lies at 2,322 metres and 1.5 km north of the seat, Tezontepec, at the end of the Basin of Mexico that forms the Tizayuca valley.

    The terrain is plain and low hills, with a semi-dry temperate climate, and water runs to the Río Tezontepec sub-basin. Between 2010 and 2020 the population hardly moved (from 1,284 to 1,330), so there has been none of the population surge seen elsewhere in Hidalgo. The whole municipality covers only 90.7 km² and climbs between 2,400 and 2,900 metres in its higher parts, next to the State of Mexico border.

    Local farming revolves around barley (2,381 hectares sown in 2015), maize (380) and beans (134); even so, almost two thirds of the municipality's jobs are in services. Tezontepec was raised to the rank of villa by Hidalgo's Congress in 1912 and has been a municipality since 1865. There is another Morelos in the state, in Mixquiahuala municipality: do not mix them up.

    How to get to Morelos

    Drive from Pachuca: 35 min, 36 km

    Colonia Morelos is 1.5 km north of the centre of Villa de Tezontepec, so the route is to reach the seat and head north along a local street. Pachuca is about 26 km away in a straight line (roughly 30 minutes) and Zempoala, the neighbouring Pueblo Mágico, about 16 km (roughly 20 minutes); by road both distances are a little longer. Check on a map that you are going to the Morelos of Tezontepec and not another of the same name: there is one in Mixquiahuala de Juárez, over 40 km away. For those without a car, the sensible way is to reach Tezontepec by public transport and take a taxi for the final stretch.
