About San Juan Evangelista Analco
Analco, at 2,090 m, is the seat of a small municipality in the Sierra Norte, in the Ixtlán district: about 33 km² and a little over 400 people in all. Its patron is San Juan Evangelista, whose day is 27 December. It is ringed by other mountain villages: San Juan Atepec about 2 km west, Santa María Jaltianguis about 4.5 km east, Abejones and Ixtlán de Juárez itself about 10 km away.
The population has been shrinking. In 1900 there were 939 people; the peak was 986 in 1970, and the count then fell to 608 in 1990, 420 in 2000, 388 in 2010 and 374 in 2020.
Every one of the village's 124 homes (2020) has electricity and piped water; nearly seven in ten have a mobile phone and four in ten have internet, so there is usually signal in the centre. The climate is temperate.
The best-known neighbour in the area is Capulálpam de Méndez, a Pueblo Mágico, about 25 minutes away by car.

From Oaxaca city take federal highway 175 toward Guelatao and Ixtlán de Juárez (about 2 hours on a winding road with steep drop-offs). By public transport, the Cuenca bus (ADO group) from Oaxaca to Ixtlán de Juárez runs about 4 times a day and takes roughly 1 h 40 min. From Ixtlán, Analco is about 10 km away: ask there about colectivos or take a taxi.
Capulálpam de Méndez, the best-known village of the area, is about 25 minutes by car. We found no timetable for direct combis to Analco: confirm in Ixtlán before planning your return.
