About San Pedro Ixcatlán

San Pedro Ixcatlán sits about 96 m above sea level on the shore of the Miguel Alemán reservoir, and its concrete streets run almost down to the water. It is the seat of a Mazatec municipality in the Papaloapan region, in the Tuxtepec district, and Mazatec is spoken in its communities alongside Spanish.

When the reservoir filled in 1955 the water covered much of the farmland and many families had to move; the town centre was left on a peninsula. Before the flooding, Olmec-style figurines and ceremonial axes turned up here, a sign that people lived in the area some 2,000 years ago. Piped water arrived in 1964 and a road for motor vehicles around 1968. The census tells the story of the ups and downs: 4,693 people in 1921, only 1,416 in 1960 and 3,440 in 2020.

People now live from fishing and the fish farms on the lake, from maize and from cattle. On the table you will find ceviche, mojarra, shrimp, yuca tamales and quelites, and bread is baked in town. Workshops embroider the Mazatec huipil, and guayaberas carry similar embroidery.

The fiesta of San Pedro runs from 13 to 15 May, with dances, horse races and boat races; 29 June is the saint's day. At Todos Santos families set up altars and the toxo'o dance is performed. The dry season, October to April, is the best time for a boat trip on the reservoir; in April and May the heat can pass 40 °C.

How to get to San Pedro Ixcatlán

Drive from Tuxtepec: 1 h 5 min, 63 km

By car from Tuxtepec it is about 60 km on federal highway 182 toward San Felipe Jalapa de Díaz: after roughly 54 km turn right and drive the remaining 6 km or so into town. Allow about 1 h 15 min. Tuxtepec itself is reached on highway 175 from Oaxaca city (about 280 km), on 145 from Córdoba, Veracruz, or from Puebla through Tehuacán and Teotitlán.

Without a car: take an ADO bus to the Tuxtepec terminal and then a van to Ixcatlán. It leaves from Blvd. Plan de Tuxtepec in colonia 5 de Mayo, between Melchor Ocampo and Ignacio Allende streets, four blocks from the ADO terminal. The fare is about $50, the ride about 1 h 30, and the last departure in each direction is at 5 p.m.; We found no timetable for the earlier ones, so ask at the stop and do not leave the return for late.

For Mil Islas there is another turn-off, onto a dirt road, a few kilometres past the Ixcatlán one; it reaches San Andrés Cerro Quemado in about 15 km. Boats can be hired at Cerro Quemado, in Ixcatlán or at Temascal; tours start at about $200 per person.
