About Santo Domingo Tonalá

In Mixtec the place is Ñuuniñe, "place of heat", and the Nahuatl name, Tonalá, says almost the same: the place where the sun comes out. It lies at 1,364 metres in the north of the Mixteca, about 50 km from Huajuapan de León, and much lower than the towns of the Mixteca Alta, hence the warmth: 16 to 24 degrees C on average and 700 to 1,000 mm of rain a year. The patron is Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

The town peaked at 2,704 people in 2010 and fell to 2,158 in 2020, as many leave to study or work elsewhere. They come back for fiestas, which is when the town is at its liveliest: 7 and 8 January, the Virgin of Juquila; 2 February, Candelaria; 3 and 4 May, Santa Cruz; in August, the fiesta of Santo Domingo; 2 November, Day of the Dead; and in December, the posadas.

The municipality has 18 localities and a lot of low forest: nearly 40% of its land is tropical forest, with some woodland higher up. People work palm into mats, tenates and fire fans, and eat turkey mole, corn tamales, pozole, chiles rellenos, and sweets such as amaranth, jamoncillo and mamones; fiestas bring brass bands and mariachis. The town's schools teach children about local plants and animals, and signs urge care of the surroundings.

Huajuapan is reached from Puebla on highway 190 (ORO line buses run that stretch). From Huajuapan we found no published timetable for colectivos, vans or buses to Tonalá, nor the operator's name; ask at the Huajuapan bus station where Tonalá transport leaves. If you drive, go in daylight with a full tank, since the road is mountain country.
