    About Atoyatempan

    Atoyatempan is the seat of the municipality of the same name in central Puebla, about 39 km south-east of the capital in a straight line. The name comes from the Nahuatl atóyatl, river, tentli, edge, and pan: "on the bank of the spilling water". The town had 7,269 people in 2020 and stands at about 1,950 m. The municipality covers just 21.69 km², making it one of the smallest in the state, and borders Tecali de Herrera to the north, Tlanepantla and Huitziltepec to the east, Molcaxac to the south and Tzicatlacoyan to the west.

    The town sits between two valleys, the Puebla-Tlaxcala valley and the Tepeaca valley. The north of the municipality is the southern edge of the Puebla valley, divided from the Tepeaca valley by the Sierra del Tentzo; at the foot of that range lies the Valsequillo basin, through which flows the Atoyac River, the water that gives the town its name. Lying between two valleys, the land is flat, sloping gently from north to south.
