    About Miguel Negrete

    Miguel Negrete is a village in the municipality of Cuapiaxtla de Madero, in the Tepeaca valley in east-central Puebla. It stands at about 2,150 m and had 1,550 people in 2020. Its name honours General Miguel Negrete, born in nearby Tepeaca, who fought on the republican side during the French Intervention. At the Battle of Puebla on 5 May 1862, Negrete commanded the Second Infantry Division, posted on Acueyametepec hill, where the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe stood.

    The municipality of Cuapiaxtla de Madero, "place where tall trees abound", covers about 52 km² and its seat is about 50 km from the capital. The land is flat, typical of the Tepeaca valley, and is crossed by the Atoyac River, whose water feeds the Tepeaca irrigation district, which includes the Valsequillo canal that also runs through the municipality. It borders Los Reyes de Juárez, Tecamachalco, San Salvador Huixcolotla, Tochtepec, Tepeaca and Santo Tomás Hueyotlipan.

    From above, the village sits among the valley's irrigated fields. For travellers, it is close to Tepeaca, the general's hometown, and to San Salvador Huixcolotla, the cradle of papel picado.
