About Carmen Serdán

Carmen Serdán is a village in the municipality of Acatzingo in central Puebla, in the Tepeaca valley. It stands at about 2,240 m and had 1,743 people in 2020. Its name honours Carmen Serdán Alatriste, heroine of the Mexican Revolution, the Puebla woman who, with her brothers Aquiles and Máximo, faced Porfirio Díaz's forces at their house in Puebla in November 1910, at the start of the Maderista uprising.

The municipality of Acatzingo, "place of little reed beds", covers about 125 km² and belongs to the Tepeaca valley, the eastern extension of the Puebla-Tlaxcala valley, south of La Malinche. The valley lies at about 2,100 m and rises toward the north of the municipality to 2,500 m in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental. Its subsoil holds large deposits of limestone and marble, and its cambisol soils farm well with fertiliser, though they are clayey and heavy to work.

Acatzingo borders Nopalucan, Soltepec, Mazapiltepec de Juárez, General Felipe Ángeles, Los Reyes de Juárez, San Salvador Huixcolotla, Quecholac and Tepeaca. From above, the houses of Carmen Serdán sit among the valley's fields.
