About Cuautinchán

Cuautinchán is the seat of the municipality of the same name in central Puebla, within the capital's metropolitan area. The name comes from the Nahuatl cuauhtli, eagle, in, plural, and chan, home: "home of the eagles". The village stands at about 2,150 m and had 2,879 people in 2020.

Its great monument is the 16th-century Franciscan convent of San Juan Bautista, designed by the Spanish architect Francisco Becerra in Renaissance style; the church was finished in 1590. It has been damaged several times, above all in the Revolution, when it was looted and shot at, and in the June 1999 earthquake. Inside, an altarpiece holds six late-16th-century paintings of scenes from the life of Christ, attributed to the Flemish painter Simón Pereyns, and beside the church a museum of religious art shows Renaissance altarpieces from the same period.

The municipality, about 161 km², is crossed in the north by the Sierra de Amozoc, with pine-oak forest; to the south-west lies the Valsequillo depression and in the centre and east the Tepeaca valley. Only the Atoyac River crosses it, for a short stretch. People farm wheat, beans, maize, broad beans, peaches, capulín cherries and plums, and raise cattle, poultry and pigs; there is also a cement works and a wooden furniture exporter. It borders Amozoc, Acajete, Tepeaca, Tecali de Herrera, Tzicatlacoyan and Puebla.
