About San Jerónimo Almoloya

South-east of the capital, in the municipality of Cuautinchán, San Jerónimo Almoloya takes its name from a spring: in Nahuatl atl is water, moloni means to well up and yan marks the place where something happens, so Almoloya is "where the water springs". Its patron saint is Saint Jerome. In 2020, 3,036 people lived here, about 2,140 m above sea level.

Cuautinchán, "home of the eagles", is part of the Puebla metropolitan area and covers about 161 km². The Sierra de Amozoc, with pine-oak forest, crosses its north; to the south-west lies the Valsequillo depression, and the Tepeaca valley opens in the centre and east. It has almost no streams apart from a short stretch of the Atoyac River and brooks off the sierra, which makes the spring behind the village's name all the more notable. The municipal seat keeps a 16th-century Renaissance Franciscan convent with paintings attributed to the Flemish artist Simón Pereyns.

In Almoloya festivals mean dancing: the village's celebrations bring dance groups out onto the square. The municipality borders Amozoc, Acajete, Tepeaca, Tecali de Herrera, Tzicatlacoyan and Puebla, and people farm wheat, beans, maize, broad beans and fruit.
