Coatzingo

Coatzingo is the seat of the municipality of the same name in south-central Puebla, about 109 km from the capital by road. The name comes from the Nahuatl coatl, snake, tzin, diminutive, and co, in: "among the little snakes"; the municipality reads it as "little snake of the spring". The village stands at about 1,180 m according to INEGI and had 2,113 people in 2020; the municipality, about 69 km², had 3,105 in 2005.

The land is mostly flat, without major heights. The north-east belongs to the Tepexi plains, the part south of the Atoyac River to the Sierra de Acatlán, and the rest to the Matamoros valley. Its soils formed in the Mesozoic and are used mainly for grazing, woodland and farming. Water comes from the Atoyac and Huehuetlán rivers and seasonal streams, in the Balsas basin.

It borders Teopantlán and Huatlatlauca to the north, Ahuatlán to the west and Zacapala and Ahuatlán to the east and south. From above, the village lies by the river among green plots and the valley's dry hills.
