About Huatlatlauca

Huatlatlauca is the seat of the municipality of the same name in south-central Puebla; its full name is Santa María de los Reyes Huatlatlauca. It comes from the Nahuatl cuautla, hill, atl, water, tlatlauqui, red, and can, place: "hill where the water runs red". The village stands at about 1,570 m among ravines and had 770 people in 2020; the municipality has 23 settlements.

Mixtec and Popoloca groups founded it, and the Spaniards subdued it around 1521. Then came the Augustinians, who reached New Spain in 1533: between 1536 and 1538 they founded their convent here, dedicated to the Three Kings, under friars Jorge de Ávila and Jerónimo Jiménez de San Esteban. By 1750 it fell under the diocese of Puebla, in 1768 it was an alcaldía mayor, later it belonged to the old district of Tepexi, and by 1895 it appeared as a free municipality.

The convent of the Three Kings, one of the Augustinians' first in the region, is still the heart of the village. Around it lies a landscape of dry ravines that glow at sunset, as in the photo, on land sloping down toward the Atoyac basin.
