About Tepazolco

Tapazolli is nest in Nahuatl and co marks a place, so Tepazolco is the "place of nests". This village of 1,907 people (2020), at about 1,960 m, belongs to Tlacotepec de Benito Juárez in the Tehuacán and Sierra Negra region, about 42 km from Tehuacán in a straight line.

The municipality, about 400 km², ranges from 1,880 to 2,900 m and straddles the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, with gently sloping valleys, and the ranges of southern Puebla. It is semi-arid, temperate country, averaging 12 to 18 °C with only 400 to 800 mm of rain; almost half is farmed and most of the rest is scrub. Its streams run only in the rains and mostly drain to the Salado and Papaloapan rivers, with a smaller strip draining to the Atoyac.

The seat proudly notes that Benito Juárez worked for three days from a house on Avenida Juárez, and its church of the Santa Cruz is 16th-century. In Santa María la Alta people weave hats and other palm goods. Typical sweets are made from pitaya and xoconoxtle, fruits of semi-desert cacti, and pulque is the drink. More than ten indigenous languages are spoken in the municipality, mostly Nahuatl and Popoloca.
