Yehualtepec

South of Tecamachalco, Yehualtepec heads a municipality of plains and low rocky hills in east-central Puebla. The place name is Nahuatl, from yahualli, roundness, tepetl, hill, and c, in: "in the round of the hills" or "ringed by hills". It lies at roughly 2,110 m above sea level and counted 7,961 inhabitants in 2020.

Its original population was Nahua. A confraternity of the Immaculate Conception existed from 1588, according to its record book, and in 1604 the area joined the fourth congregation, with its own church community. In the 19th century it belonged to the district of Tecamachalco, and in 1895 it became a free municipality.

The municipality, about 126 km², lies between 1,960 and 2,600 m and is mostly plain with rocky low hills. It sits on a watershed: half drains to the Atoyac and the Balsas basin, half to the Salado River and the Papaloapan basin; its main watercourses are irrigation channels fed by streams. The climate is mild and sub-humid over most of it and semi-dry to the south, with means of 16 to 18 °C. It borders Tecamachalco, Palmar de Bravo, Tlacotepec de Benito Juárez and Xochitlán Todos Santos.
