About Villa de El Carmen Tequexquitla

Villa de El Carmen Tequexquitla is the seat of the municipality of the same name, at the far eastern edge of Tlaxcala and surrounded by the state of Puebla. It lies at about 2,370 metres, roughly 63 km east of Tlaxcala city, and had 14,004 residents at the 2020 census. The name comes from Nahuatl and means a place where tequesquite abounds, the natural salt of alkaline soils; the locality is recorded as founded on 19 September 1804, and El Carmen refers to its patron, the Virgen del Carmen.

The parish of Nuestra Señora del Carmen is in a popular style, with contrasting colours and a yellow-and-brown facade dating from the 19th century; its walls are stone and the roof is a barrel vault. Nearby stands the Compañía church, from about 1890, which was left unfinished and keeps only part of its walls. The municipality is plains and low hills, scrub, some pine and part of the Totolcingo lagoon.

The main fiesta is 16 July. On the night of 15 to 16 July there is a procession with dances, carpets of fruit and seeds, sawdust carpets and flowers; the Negritos, Segadores, Monarcas, Tocotines and Inditos are danced to violin music. The closing of the fair includes a bull run through the centre, Huamantla style. Local crafts include pictures made of popotillo and tule, sotol-palm basketry and a talavera workshop; at the table, tlacoyos, mutton barbacoa in mixiote and white pit barbacoa.
