About Miravalles
Miravalles is a village in the municipality of Oriental in eastern Puebla, on the Llanos de San Juan. It stands at about 2,380 m and had 1,463 people in 2020. According to its locality record, it was founded on 3 July 1942.
That date matches the birth of the municipality: Oriental became a free municipality on 2 July 1942. Its name comes from the old Oriental station of the interoceanic railway linking Mexico City with Veracruz, so called because it lay east of the capital. Until shortly before 1917 it was just a station in the district of San Juan de los Llanos; families who settled around it drove its growth and, given its importance to the railway, on 29 October 1917 it was made a pueblo.
The municipality of Oriental, about 299 km², is the state's 30th largest and borders Libres, Tepeyahualco and San Nicolás Buenos Aires, among others. From above, Miravalles sits among farmed plains. From here it is a short drive to federal highway 129 and to the sights of eastern Puebla: the Cantona archaeological site, Cerro Pizarro and the crater lakes.
