About San Salvador el Seco

San Salvador el Seco is the seat of the municipality of the same name in east-central Puebla, at about 2,420 m. The town had 19,648 people in 2020. Its original name was Cuauyehualulco, "place surrounded by groves", because it sits on a wooded hilltop, and it was founded by Nahua groups. The present name comes from the old roads: at the entrance to the town stood a large dead tree that served as a landmark and meeting point for muleteers heading to Veracruz, and the Spanish encomenderos ended up calling the place El Seco, the dry one. San Salvador was added for its patron, the Divino Salvador. It belonged to the old district of Chalchicomula and became a free municipality in 1895.

Its most important building is the 17th-century parish church of the Divino Salvador, one of the oldest in the region, built of quarried stone, with altars ranging from Baroque to Neoclassical and a life-size figure of the patron on the high altar; it holds about 500 people. In front of the town hall stands a statue of Miguel Hidalgo. Stone workshops in town carve headstones and religious sculpture.

The main festival is on 6 August for the Divino Salvador, with processions, dances and a fair. From 1 to 5 May the town celebrates the founding of the municipality with dances in the neighbourhoods, and on 22 November it honours Saint Cecilia.
