About Aljojuca

Aljojuca is the seat of the municipality of the same name in east-central Puebla, at about 2,470 m. The 2020 count gave the village 4,147 inhabitants; the municipality, created in 1895, covers about 52 km². The name comes from the Nahuatl atl, water, and xoxouhqui, sky-coloured: "sky-blue water", after the axalapasco, the crater lake beside the village.

Laguna de Aljojuca is one of the area's crater lakes, along with Atexcac, Alchichica and Quechulac. The municipality has no rivers, only streams that run in the rainy season, and its main bodies of water are the lagoons of Aljojuca and Tecuitlapa. All of it drains toward Lake Totolcingo, within the Atoyac basin and the Balsas region.

The climate is mild and sub-humid, with summer rain, mean temperatures of 12 to 14 °C and 600 to 700 mm of rain a year. The municipality borders San Nicolás Buenos Aires to the north, San Juan Atenco to the south, Chalchicomula de Sesma and Tlachichuca to the east, and San Salvador el Seco and Coyotepec to the west. Ciudad Serdán, the seat of Chalchicomula, is about 15 km to the south-east.
