    About San Juan Arcos Ojo de Agua

    San Juan Arcos Ojo de Agua is a village in the municipality of Chalchicomula de Sesma in eastern Puebla, about 5 km east of Ciudad Serdán, the municipal seat. It stands at about 2,780 m and had 1,678 people in 2020. Its patron saint is Saint John the Baptist, which gives the first part of the name. From above, the village stretches along a strip between ravines running down from the mountain, surrounded by farm plots.

    The village sits on the foothills of Citlaltépetl, Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's highest mountain, whose snowy summit is about 14 km east in a straight line; the 4,580 m Sierra Negra volcano, home of the Large Millimeter Telescope, is about 9 km away. The area's streams come from the melting glaciers of Citlaltépetl and soak into the San Andrés plain, the Serdán valley, which covers almost two thirds of the municipality. The soils are made of volcanic cones and debris.

    Chalchicomula's climate is mild to cold, with under 600 mm of rain a year on average. Ciudad Serdán, at 2,520 m, is the regional centre.
