About Tenochtitlán
This Tenochtitlán, in Veracruz, is a small municipal seat in the foothills of the Sierra de Chiconquiaco, at around 900 metres and half an hour from Misantla. It had 1,985 residents in 2020 and is the main town of a municipality of 28 localities. The climate is mild and humid, averaging 21 to 22 °C; rain is frequent all year and heaviest in summer and early autumn.
It shares its name with the Aztec capital, written here with an accent. The word comes from tenochtli, the hard-fruited prickly pear, and titla, among: "among the prickly pears". The municipality is young: it was formed on 2 July 1931 from nine communities split off from Tlacolulan, with its first seat in the congregation of El Camarón; in 1942-43 municipal president Agustín S. Aburto moved the council to El Colorado. A fair marks the anniversary every 10 July.
The land is all hills (El Gigante, La Campana, Peña Blanca and many more), crossed by mountain rivers such as El Camarón, El Puntón and Las Vacas that drain towards the Actopan and Misantla rivers. People live from cattle, maize, beans, coffee and mango, and some families speak Nahuatl. The fiestas are San Bartolomé Apóstol on 24-25 August, the Virgin of Guadalupe on 12 December, to whom the parish church is dedicated, a coffee fair on 13 May and, on 16 July, the fiesta of El Colorado. Tourist services are thin: the 2000 census recorded no hotels or restaurants in the municipality, so plan to sleep in Misantla or Xalapa.
