About San Antonio Tecómitl

San Antonio Tecómitl is one of the twelve pueblos originarios of Milpa Alta, a few minutes northeast of Villa Milpa Alta and bordering Tláhuac, at about 2,260 metres. The Nahuatl name is read as "in the stone pot", after a lava hollow of the Teutli volcano, the Olla de Piedra, where pots, obsidian and other prehispanic objects have turned up. A chapel to St Anthony stands there. Tradition dates the first Chichimec settlers to about 1140 and Mexica families to 1409; for centuries it was a lakeside chinampa town until the lake dried up.

The centre revolves around the Franciscan former convent of San Antonio de Padua, from the 16th century, sober and fortress-like, with a five-arch porter's lodge and a plateresque tower; inside are Baroque art and paintings of the saint's life. Across the way is Plaza Corregidora with its bandstand, and a short walk on Avenida 5 de Mayo is the market, a good place to eat. A procession of about twenty minutes links the church to the Olla de Piedra chapel. On Boulevard José López Portillo, north of the centre, a statue shows a nahual, the man who in local legends turns into a dog, donkey or pig.

The big dates: the feast of St Anthony on 13 and 14 June, now also a fair; Holy Week, with a Passion play that walks from the plaza to the calvary and has run since the 1980s; and above all Day of the Dead, with a giant offering, a grave-decorating contest on 2 November and paper balloons. There is also an ice-cream fair with flavours made in the village.
