About Volcán Teuhtli

Teuhtli is an extinct volcano rising 2,710 metres above sea level where the boroughs of Milpa Alta, Tláhuac and Xochimilco meet. It belongs to the Ajusco-Chichinauhtzin range and is a shield volcano: broad and low, far wider than it is tall. It divides the Xochimilco valley, with its chinampa villages to the north, from the Milpa Alta valley, with Villa Milpa Alta and other farming towns to the south; San Pedro Atocpan, Santiago Tulyehualco, San Antonio Tecómitl and San Juan Ixtayopan lie on its slopes. Around it are nopal fields, farmland and conifer forest.

It last erupted more than 10,000 years ago, so the crater can be visited without volcanic risk. Lava tubes are visible and two long caves are open to explore. From the Milpa Alta side, the shortest, the climb to the crater rim takes about 30 minutes on loose-earth paths, and the top looks toward Santa Fe and central Mexico City. Going down to the crater floor is hard and somewhat risky, so do it with a guide.

The mountain carries a lot of local memory: it served as a boundary between communities, a sulphur mine and a ceremonial site, and colonial-era legends make it a warrior fighting beside, or against, Popocatépetl over the love of Iztaccíhuatl. Every 3 May, Holy Cross day, a Mass is held at the summit and people climb from Milpa Alta, especially from the Santa Cruz barrio of Villa Milpa Alta; it is the most traditional route and probably the easiest. Walkers, mountain bikers and trail runners use it the rest of the year.

How to get to Volcán Teuhtli

Drive from Mexico City: 50 min, 37 km

The shortest way to the crater is from Milpa Alta, so the transport destination is Villa Milpa Alta (the summit is at 19.2237, -99.0301). Milpa Alta has no Metro, Metrobús, trolleybus or Tren Ligero: only RTP and private concession buses. The nearest Metro station is Tláhuac, the Line 12 terminus, about 12.5 km away. From there RTP buses (4 pesos) and concession buses (8 pesos) run to Villa Milpa Alta; the ride takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic and the wait can be 30 to 40 minutes because few buses run. There is also a Milpa Alta-Taxqueña bus via Xochimilco, about 2 hours. The RTP stop in Villa Milpa Alta is on calle Michoacán Oriente, about a five-minute walk from the borough plaza. No signed trailhead is documented: the practical way is to reach Villa Milpa Alta, ask for the Santa Cruz barrio and the footpath to the volcano, or hire a local guide. By car or ride-hailing app, use Villa Milpa Alta as the destination and finish on foot.
