About San Juan Texcalpan
The name Texcalpan comes from the Nahuatl texcalli, crag, and pan, a locative: roughly "place of crags". Its patron is John the Baptist, honoured every 24 June according to the municipal encyclopaedias, a date that shares the Atlatlahucan calendar with San Mateo on 21 September in the seat itself and San Miguel Arcángel on 29 September in Tlaltetelco.
The village stands at about 1,600 m, some 3 km west of Atlatlahucan, so the former convent of San Mateo Apóstol is a short hop away. It belongs to the sixteenth-century monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl that UNESCO listed as World Heritage in 1994. With 1,505 residents in 2020 it is the fourth largest of the municipality's 56 localities, and it has grown from 1,043 in 2005 and 1,162 in 2010. About 46% of people over 12 are employed, and home internet access rose from 5.7% of households in 2010 to 31.2% in 2020.
The climate is subtropical with a dry winter: a mean annual temperature near 19.7 °C and about 1,380 mm of rain, with January the coolest month and April the warmest. There is no lodging in the village itself; the nearest hotels are 6 to 7 km away in and around Atlatlahucan. Its postal code is 62847.
