About Yecapixteca

Yecapixteca shows one of the clearest growth curves around Cuautla. INEGI counted 87 residents in 1980, 390 in 1990, 744 in 2000, 938 in 2005, 1,110 in 2010 and 1,364 in 2020 (680 women and 684 men). It is now the eighth-largest of the 76 localities in the municipality of Yecapixtla.

It lies at about 1,490 metres above sea level, some 4 km west of Yecapixtla, the municipal seat, in a straight line. At that height the climate is milder than in the Cuautla valley: a mean annual temperature of 20.2 °C, with January the coolest month (about 18 °C) and April the warmest (about 23 °C), and roughly 1,260 mm of rain a year, mostly in summer. In 2020 about 91% of homes had a mobile phone and 17% had internet.

The name is Nahuatl in origin, like the seat's, but We found no source explaining its meaning. I also found no documented monument of its own, so think of it as a farming and residential village that serves as a side door to what lies around it.

What the area does offer is the seat, Yecapixtla, with its Augustinian convent of San Juan Bautista, built between 1535 and 1540, and its Feria de la Cecina, held on the last Thursday of October. Tlayacapan, a Pueblo Mágico, is about 17 km away.

How to get to Yecapixteca

Drive from Cuautla: 10 min, 9 km

From Cuautla it is about 12 km and roughly 15 minutes by car. OpenStreetMap routing leaves Cuautla along Avenida Reforma and the federal highway México 115 (Cuautla-Izúcar de Matamoros), then takes the road to Yecapixtla; Yecapixteca is about 4 km west of the seat, so the last stretch is a local road.

From Mexico City the most direct route is the México-Cuautla autopista (México 150D) and then the federal road toward Cuautla; another option is the Cuernavaca autopista with the Cuautla turn-off. By bus, a 2025 guide says to take the Sur line from TAPO, an ordinary second-class service through Chalco and Amecameca, get off at the Yecapixtla junction and take a colectivo, about 15 minutes. From Cuernavaca there is a bus to Yecapixtla in about 1 h 47 min (approx.; 2025 fares 15 to 40 pesos).

Tlayacapan, the nearest pueblo on the list, is about 17 km by road and roughly 19 minutes. We found no colectivo timetable reaching Yecapixteca itself; ask in Yecapixtla or Cuautla.
