About Huecahuasco

Huecahuasco, Nahuatl for "place of elders" or "old place", is one of the highest villages in the municipality of Ocuituco: about 2,080 metres above sea level, 6.6 km north of the municipal seat, on the slopes of Popocatépetl. The name is not an exaggeration. A study from the INAH Morelos centre lists it, as San Marcos Huecahuasco, among the subject towns of the lordship of Ocuituco in the 16th century, the same period in which the Augustinians built the convent of Santiago Apóstol at Ocuituco.

INEGI counted 2,081 residents in 2020, up from 1,785 in 2010, which makes it one of the larger localities in the municipality. The altitude gives it a cool, damp climate, with an annual mean of about 16.7 °C and more than 1,600 mm of rain a year, falling on some 238 days, so bring a jacket. Within its territory lies the Apapazco ejido, where springs fed by the volcano's meltwater rise.

The village calendar centres on the feast of St Mark on 25 April and a fair on 13 October. There are no hotels in the locality; the nearest are about 6 to 12 km away. It suits someone already on the Popocatépetl convent trail or the Ocuituco, Tetela del Volcán and Yecapixtla loop who wants to see a working village with no tourist infrastructure.

How to get to Huecahuasco

Drive from Cuautla: 35 min, 32 km

Huecahuasco is 6.6 km north of Ocuituco, the municipal seat, on an asphalt road. From Cuautla, the nearest city (about 21 km in a straight line; allow 45 minutes to an hour by road, approx.), head up to Yecapixtla and then to Ocuituco by the paved road that links the municipality to Yecapixtla and Tetela del Volcán; the area is mountainous. From Mexico City, reach Cuautla on the Mexico City-Cuautla toll road (Mex 115D, about two hours, approx.) and continue the same way.

For public transport We found no published schedule for a direct colectivo; the usual way is to reach Cuautla, take a combi to Yecapixtla and then another to Ocuituco, where you change or take a taxi to Huecahuasco. From Tlayacapan, the nearest pueblo on our list, it is about 31 km (30 minutes by car according to PueblosAmérica), but there is no road we can recommend as a direct link, so go back through Cuautla. Travel in daylight and bring a jacket: rain is frequent at this altitude.
