    About Tecajec

    Tecajec is one of the better-documented old settlements of Yecapixtla. An INAH supplement (El Tlacuache, no. 879) explains that the map accompanying the 1580 Relación de Acapistla lists Tecaxiqui, today's Tecajec, among the estancias subject to Yecapixtla. A 1571 record mentions it as Tecaxic. The name is Nahuatl: tetl, stone; caxitl, deep vessel; and -co, place, giving "in the stone vessel".

    The village stands at 1,572 metres in a landscape of ravines, which the same INAH text describes as a feature of the whole Yecapixtla area. Wikimedia Commons has a photograph titled "Barranca de Tecajec", whose author places it in the west of the neighbouring municipality of Temoac.

    INEGI censuses show a small village that more than tripled: 313 residents in 1900, 149 in 1921 (after the Revolution), 645 in 1980, 1,044 in 1990, 1,370 in 2000, 1,665 in 2010 and 1,892 in 2020. Yecapixtla, the seat, is at 1,500 m and about 64.5 km from Cuernavaca and 99.4 km from Mexico City, per English Wikipedia.

    How to get to Tecajec

    Drive from Cuautla: 25 min, 24 km

    Tecajec is about 14 km in a straight line from Cuautla (roughly 15 to 25 minutes by car, an estimate) and some 25 km from Tlayacapan, the nearest pueblo on the list. The seat, Yecapixtla, is 64.5 km from Cuernavaca according to Wikipedia. OpenStreetMap shows a tertiary road labelled "Tecajec Ocuituco" serving the village and a Carretera Los Alacranes nearby; we could not find the number of the main highway or the state of the last stretch, so ask in Yecapixtla for the turn-off. From Cuautla the logical route is toward Yecapixtla and then local roads. We found no named bus or colectivo line with schedules.
