About Huazulco

Huazulco announces itself: along the road, family shops sell palanquetas, alegrías, obleas and amaranth sugar skulls, which is why it is called the "Capital del amaranto", the state's leading producer of the plant. It is one of four communities in the municipality of Temoac, in eastern Morelos, at 1,551 m above sea level and close to the Puebla line; it had 4,439 residents in 2020, up from 2,451 in 1980.

The name is Nahuatl and, according to INEGI, means "place of huauzontle" or "place of the hair plant". Amaranth has been grown and eaten since before the Conquest, and according to México Desconocido it was banned in colonial times and nearly died out; communities such as Huazulco, with at least 40 families, kept planting it. In 2018 Diario de Morelos visited a family workshop that made some two thousand skulls per Day of the Dead season, priced from 3 to 20 pesos, with a mix of piloncillo, vinegar and water; that year, because the local harvest was scarce, the family had to bring grain from Puebla. In 2025 Tus Buenas Noticias reported palanquetas from 3 pesos and skulls at 6.

The big fiesta is for Santa Catarina, the village's patron saint: the fair dance opens on 24 November and the 25th is the main day, with a welcome arch and a sawdust carpet in front of the sanctuary. Holy Week also brings a fair more than a kilometre long, with wood and clay crafts. According to Wikipedia (es), the traditional fair runs from 24 to 26 November.
