About Temoac

Temoac is the seat of a small municipality, about 45 km² on the eastern edge of Morelos where it meets Puebla, at 1,588 metres, with 6,447 residents in the 2020 census. It used to belong to Zacualpan de Amilpas; discontent among Temoac, Amilcingo, Huazulco and Popotlán with that seat led to the municipality being created on 17 March 1977. The name comes from Nahuatl temoa, to descend: "at the descent", although tradition links it to a waterfall.

The church of San Martín Obispo, the town's patron, is the oldest: according to the municipality it was begun in 1545 and finished in 1581. There are others, such as the Señor de la Columna, known as del Cerrito, which is well preserved. The most distinctive sight is the cuexcomates, pre-Hispanic granaries of clay and grass that keep maize without any chemicals; about 15 remain in the seat and about 30 in neighbouring Popotlán, whose name, "where straw abounds", explains why so many. The region also grows sorghum, peanuts and amaranth, the last mainly in Huazulco and Amilcingo, where they make amaranth wafers.

The calendar runs on jubilees and fairs: the fifth Friday of Lent honours the Señor de la Columna, 19 March is the San José neighbourhood feast, 17 March brings a parade for the municipality's anniversary and 7 to 11 November is the San Martín jubilee. In Huazulco the municipality's biggest fair falls on Holy Tuesday, with another on 25 November for Saint Catherine. The Amatzinac river, which rises on Popocatépetl, waters the area; to the west a ravine marks the boundary with Ayala.
