About Zona Arqueológica Las Pilas

At Las Pilas everything comes back to water. The site, in the town of Jonacatepec, is surrounded by springs, and the people who lived here became skilled at handling groundwater, building channel systems to catch and store it. It was a place of water worship, and its remains now sit, fittingly, inside a swimming park fed by the same springs.

The first platforms went up alongside the water systems; later phases show ideas that arrived with the expansion of Teotihuacan, and the visible buildings date from AD 500 to 650. An offering of two Preclassic pots, similar to those found at Chalcatzingo, points to a much earlier occupation. The ceremonial centre declined around 650, when Teotihuacan fell, though various groups went on living here.

The ceremonial area had six mounds, four of them excavated and grouped around two plazas. Plaza A, enclosed by Structures 1, 2 and 3, holds two water-collection systems and a circular Postclassic oven; Plaza B, between Structures 2 and 4, has two altars, one with a plain stela. Once the second water system was abandoned, its channels became a burial ground for high-ranking people: finds include a Tlaloc effigy jar and small cone-shaped figures, the conitos, now on show at the Cuauhnáhuac Museum in Cuernavaca's Palace of Cortés.

Town growth and the building of the swimming park ate into the site, so this is a short visit: the plaza walls, traces of stucco and the Plaza B altar are what remain. It pairs well with Chalcatzingo, a few minutes away, and with Jonacatepec's Augustinian convent.
