    About Atotonilco

    In Nahuatl, Atotonilco means "place of hot springs": atl (water), totonilli (hot) and co (place). The name fits this village in the municipality of Tepalcingo, in eastern Morelos, home to the Las Termas de Atotonilco spa. The 2020 census counted 3,539 residents; in 1900 there were 652, and growth was fastest between 1960 and 1980, when the population went from 990 to 2,374.

    The Termas are the reason to come. The articles we read describe thermal-water pools, water slides, a children's area, a restaurant-bar and a hotel; the water is reported at 28 to 38 °C and described as mineral and sulphurous. A 2023 article counts eight pools, barbecue grills and a garden. It opens every day from 7:00 to 18:00, and a report from October 2026 gives admission at 150 pesos for adults, 120 for children and 100 for seniors with an INAPAM card. The hotel offers European and American plans, the latter with three meals a day and spa entry.

    The village also has a church dedicated to Santa Mónica, and a microbus service links it to Tepalcingo, the municipal seat. Tepalcingo has the sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno, the Señor de Tepalcingo, which draws pilgrims all year, with its fair on the third Friday of Lent.

    How to get to Atotonilco

    Drive from Cuautla: 35 min, 32 km

    By car from Mexico City, take the Mexico-Cuernavaca toll road and continue toward Cuautla; from there follow the road toward Jonacatepec and Atotonilco. An ADN40 guide puts it at about 45 minutes from Cuautla and about two hours from the capital, longer in traffic.

    By bus, take a coach from Terminal Taxqueña or the Mexico City Airport terminal to Cuautla. In Cuautla, walk one block against the flow of traffic and look for colectivos signed "Atotonilco" or "Tepalcingo". Tepalcingo is about 38 km by road from Cuautla; the Volcanes and Autobuses SUR lines serve that route, and a microbus links Tepalcingo with Atotonilco.
