    About Huitzililla

    The name comes from Nahuatl: huitzilin is hummingbird and tlan marks abundance, so Huitzililla reads as the place where hummingbirds are plentiful. It sits in the municipality of Ayala, in eastern Morelos, at roughly 1,207 metres above sea level, and the 2020 INEGI census counted 2,878 residents.

    The census series shows how much it has changed. In 1900 there were 245 people, in 1921 only 127, and the village stayed under 1,000 until 1980, when it reached 1,755. Growth since then has been steady: 1,926 in 1990, 2,387 in 2000 and 2,535 in 2010. It ranks ninth among the 149 localities of the municipality. The climate is warm, with a yearly mean of 22.4 C and about 1,150 mm of rain, most of it in summer; September is the wettest month and April the hottest.

    What sets Huitzililla apart from its neighbours is its airfield, a private 1,024 metre strip used mainly for general aviation and skydiving. Skydive Cuautla runs from here and takes people up to 17,000 feet for a tandem jump with about a minute of free fall. Local feast listings give the patron saint, Saint Thomas the Apostle, as celebrated on 21 December.

    How to get to Huitzililla

    Drive from Cuautla: 25 min, 20 km

    By car, Huitzililla is about 16 km southeast of Cuautla (roughly 20 to 25 minutes). The address Skydive Cuautla gives for the airfield is the Tlayecac-Huitzililla road, postal code 62720; the village is in the municipality of Ayala, about 13 km in a straight line from the seat, Ciudad Ayala. The runway sits at 18.7024, -98.8919, handy for a navigation app.

    From Mexico City the easiest plan is to reach Cuautla first. Pullman de Morelos leaves from the Terminal Sur Taxqueña (Calzada Taxqueña 1320) several times a day, about two hours on the road according to published timetables, and its Cuautla terminal is at Máximo Bravo 53-D downtown. Buses from the TAPO also run, only slower. By car the trip to Cuautla takes around two hours, depending on traffic.

    Between Cuautla and Huitzililla public transport runs through Ayala (buses, combis and taxis), but We found no published route with schedules: ask in central Cuautla or take a taxi straight to the airfield. Tlaltizapán de Zapata, the Pueblo Mágico to the south, is about 32 km away (roughly 36 minutes by car).
