About San Juan Ahuehueyo
San Juan Ahuehueyo is a locality in the municipality of Ayala, in central Morelos, at about 1,170 metres. INEGI counted 2,547 residents in 2020. The name joins the patron saint, John the Baptist, to Nahuatl ahuehuetl, the ahuehuete or Montezuma cypress, and the suffix -yo: "place of ahuehuetes". The Ahuehueyo ravine carries the name and runs into the Ayala river near Moyotepec, so the tree gives identity to both the village and its gully.
Its calendar has two moments for Saint John: the feast on 24 June and another in February. But what is best documented in photographs is Day of the Dead. Pictures that residents and visitors uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in 2019, during the Wiki Loves México contest, show altars, cempasúchil marigolds, sisters cleaning graves in the cemetery and a mass on that date, the custom most photographed in the community.
Ayala as a municipality is closely tied to Zapata's story. Its Zapata Route runs through Anenecuilco, where the leader was born, Chinameca, where he was killed, Tlaltizapán, where he had his headquarters, and Cuautla. On the same municipal road lies Tenextepango, with an ex-hacienda and a feast of Santiago Apóstol on 25 July. The seat, Ciudad Ayala, has grown into Cuautla, so the village is a short hop from a big city.
How to get to San Juan Ahuehueyo
Drive from Cuautla: 25 min, 17 km
From Cuautla, head down the federal Cuautla-Jojutla road, which passes Anenecuilco and Ayala and reaches Abelardo L. Rodríguez. From there the municipal road runs through Abelardo L. Rodríguez, Leopoldo Heredia, Tenextepango, Ahuehueyo and Jaloxtoc, the route described in the Ayala municipal monograph. Cuautla is about 13 km away in a straight line, approx. 15 minutes by road, and Tlaltizapán about 22 km, approx. 25 minutes. From Mexico City, the southern terminal (Taxqueña) has departures to Cuautla taking about 90 minutes (Pullman de Morelos); the last leg is by taxi or local transport. We found no combi lines with published schedules to Ahuehueyo: ask in Cuautla or in Ayala.
