    About Ixtlilco el Chico

    The name Ixtlilco comes from Nahuatl: ixtli is plain, tlilli is black, and the -co ending marks a place, so it means "on the black plain". The "Chico" (small) tells it apart from neighbouring Ixtlilco el Grande. It lies in south-eastern Morelos, municipality of Tepalcingo, at about 1,090 metres and some 4 km from the seat. The climate is hot, averaging about 23.6 °C with around 1,060 mm of rain, mostly in summer.

    The 2020 census counted 1,432 residents, against 1,340 in 2010 and 1,229 in 2005: a farming village that grows slowly. There is no lodging in the locality; the nearest is about 5 or 6 km north, toward Tepalcingo. Residents' reviews mention the quiet, the food and the festivals, and complain about water, roads and transport.

    What justifies the trip lies around it. Tepalcingo has the sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno, which Agustín Pila Dreinhofer's book on baroque architecture calls the best example of popular baroque in New Spain, with a pink façade of twisted columns and stucco figures; the 2017 earthquake damaged it. Tepalcingo also holds the oldest fair in Morelos, on the third Friday of Lent. And in Ixtlilco el Grande, on 16 September, the simulacro de los mecos is staged, a mock battle between indigenous people and Spaniards that recalls the uprising of 1810.

    How to get to Ixtlilco el Chico

    Drive from Cuautla: 45 min, 42 km

    Ixtlilco el Chico is about 4 km south of Tepalcingo by road. From Cuautla, the nearest city, it is around 36 minutes by car to Tepalcingo according to Rome2Rio (approx.; about 32 km in a straight line); from Tepalcingo continue about 4 km south to Ixtlilco. From Mexico City reach Cuautla on the Mexico City-Cuautla toll road (Mex 115D, about two hours, approx.).

    By bus, coaches run from TAPO to Cuautla; from Cuautla to Jonacatepec buses leave every hour (the Volcanes line, about 40 minutes), and a direct bus to Tepalcingo runs every three hours, around 1 h 10 min, according to Rome2Rio (check schedules). From Tepalcingo take a taxi or colectivo to Ixtlilco. Tlaltizapán, the nearest pueblo on our list, is about 34 km away in a straight line, with long roads in between. There is no lodging in the locality; look in Tepalcingo.
