    About Teotlalco

    Teotlalco is the seat of the municipality of the same name at the far south-western tip of Puebla, near the Morelos line, in the Izúcar de Matamoros economic region and Puebla's Mixteca. The village stands at about 1,000 m and had 1,892 people in 2020.

    Its Nahuatl name has two readings. It may come from teotlalli, the word for desert, meaning "in the desert"; or from téotl, god, and tlalli, land, "in the land of the god". Both suit the dry, hot landscape of this corner of the state.

    The municipality, about 137 km², ranges from 900 to 1,900 m. It borders Huehuetlán el Chico to the east and Jolalpan to the south, while to the west and north it meets the Morelos municipalities of Tlaquiltenango, Tepalcingo and Axochiapan. Teotlalco therefore looks to Morelos as much as to Puebla: Cuautla is about 43 km away in a straight line, closer than any large Puebla city, and the nearest Pueblo Mágico is Tlaltizapán in Morelos. From above, the village sits among fields and hills of dry forest.
