Buenavista de Benito Juárez

The village's surname honours Benito Juárez, the president who governed through the Reform War; the first half, Buenavista, speaks of the open view across the hot lowlands of south-western Puebla. It had 1,632 residents in 2020 and sits at 1,047 m, low for Puebla, 52 km in a straight line from Cuautla in Morelos and 79 km from the state capital. It belongs to the municipality of Chietla.

Chietla covers 326.53 km² of the Atlixco and Matamoros Valley region, and its ground climbs from about 960 m to 2,000 m. Its neighbours are Tepexco to the north, Tilapa to the north-east, Izúcar de Matamoros and Atzala to the east and Chiautla to the south; on the west it meets Axochiapan, already in Morelos. All its water drains to the Balsas: the Nexapa, Atila, Ahuehuello, El Muerto and Atoyac flow year-round, joined in the rainy season by El Borbollón and Jalatlaco. It is warm, sub-humid country, with average temperatures of 18 to 26 °C and 800 to 1,000 mm of rain, most of it in summer.

Nearly half of the municipality is still covered in tropical forest and a little under half is farmed; woodland and grassland are small patches. In the seat, Chietla, stands the church of San Francisco, built in the 16th century and open every day of the year. Local cooking centres on mole poblano, pipián and tamales; for dessert there is seed jamoncillo, and to drink, corn-dough or granillo atole and chocolate.
