Town 10 km northwest of Pahuatlán
Hidalgo mountain town that gave its name to tenangos, the bright Otomí embroidery of animals and plants.
Just over the state line in Hidalgo, Tenango de Doria is a small mountain town in the Sierra de Tenango, and its name is now known around the world thanks to embroidery. Tenangos are cloths covered in brightly stitched animals, plants and scenes from village life, made by Otomí women in the town and the communities around it, such as San Nicolás.
The style has spread far beyond textiles. Local artisans paint the same designs on clay plates and teapots, and the town hall itself is decorated with tenango-style flora and fauna, with big colorful letters spelling the town's name out front. Around a quarter of the municipality's people speak an Indigenous language, almost all of them Otomí.
The town's other sights are modest: the Church of San Agustín, built in 1891, and the hills around it, including Cerro del Brujo, El Arco and El Cirio. Come on a Sunday, when the weekly market fills the street by the town hall, for the best chance to find embroidery and meet the people who make it.
